Description
SAAB 900 TURBO S CABRIOLET
THE CABRIOLET COMING FROM THE NORTH
Fast, glued to the road, with excellent finishes and a relaxing guide that makes it perfect for long journeys.
RESOLVE A PROBLEM, OFFERING FOUR TRUE POSTS AND A BAGGAGE TO WHICH WANTED A CABRIOLET. BECAME AN ICON.
In the Europe of 1983 the discoveries of the D segment did not exist. The 900 Cabriolet (900 Convertible on the English-speaking markets) was born that year from a cooperation between Saab and the American Sunroof Company, led by a technician of clear Italian origins, Steven Rossi. Before, for those who wanted an open car with a real trunk and four seats, there was only the BMW 3 Series (E30) of the German coachbuilder Baur, with a large rib that ran from one side to the other connecting the two elements of the sunroof, like on Porche) 11 Targa. To buy a Saab 900, although preseries, it will be necessary to wait for 1985; the delay will allow the BMW to come out almost simultaneously with an E30 Cabriolet made directly at the factory. Until 1994 will be 48.888 the 900 Cabriolet first series built. The success will be even greater than what the famous and visionary Robert J. Sinclar, president of the US Saab and putative father of the project, had imagined. On many markets the 900 discovery will drag the image of the Saab high, bringing what was seen as a "social democratic" House, with cars of substance, set up little more than spartanely and offered at a reasonable price, to be a status symbol. Merit of the work of importers such as the Italian Sidauto, presided over by a tall figure wrapped, for the fans of the brand, by a halo of legend: Count Odoardo Pagani Mariani della Rovere. Among the intuitions of Pagani, to whom Trollhattan are so grateful to have dedicated a color (the gray cane of gucile Odoardo Gray), that of importing convertibles with decidedly sybaritic outfits: leather seats and air conditioning, for example are standard. From 1993, with the Saab now under control General Motors, there will be three other convertibles: the second 900 series (1993-97, 900 NG or 900 GM in the jargon of the "Saabisti"), the 9.3 first series (9.3 OG, 1--BLOCKED--) and the second (9.3 NG, 2004), which with an intermediate restyling will accompany the brand until its demise (2013). Despite this, none of Saab's plans for rebirth over the years contemplated the arrival of a cabriolet, never produced in Trollhattan: up to the 9.3 first series were born in Finland, in the Valmet settlement of Uusikapunki, while the 9.3 second series were realized in Graz, Austria, in the Magna-Steyr factory.
The 900 Turbo S is the oldest of the Cabriolets, the most powerful of the first generation. Built in 1990, it has almost all the options, like the rare Momo leather steering wheel. Like all Turbo S, it has the side bands between the wheel arches, an accessory known as the Aero Kit, which sometimes makes Aero erroneously call the specimens that mount it; only the combi-coupes (3 doors) have an outfitting with this name. It has covered only 100 thousand kilometers and has simply been subjected to routine maintenance, with the required coupons and an eye for apompe, fittings and taps that move liquids. The undersigned and current owner, he went to look for it without fail, took it home and put it into service after a check in the workshop. The upholstery of the seats in very thick Scottish leather and the rigid and semi-opaque plastics hold the years very well. Noteworthy, as tradition of Saab, brightness, elasticity and road holding. The presence of ABS in addition to the powerful braking system with four discs makes it still current even for daily use on the fast mix. On our market it is very difficult to find a 900 first series set up at the top and really beautiful: who has it if you hold it tight, if you have not already sold it to the north of the Alps.
